For the last few years, my classroom has shifted outside for more experiential and place-based opportunities. Similarly, we have tried to provide more service learning and community connections, especially with our classroom collaboration with Children's Hospital of Wisconsin.
To kick off this year, my class decided to combine the two with a special pumpkin and treat sale for Children's Hospital called Pumpkins for a Purpose.
The class collected decorations, added them to the trail, and spread the word about the event and why it was being held.
The trail looked great. It brought in many guests before the event even started.
However, Mother Nature wasn't in the best mood. Chilly winds and flurries emerged as the event began.
But that didn't stop approximately 150 guests from enjoying a fun-filled hike with tasks and treats.
Guests snapped selfies with scarecrows,
created natural paintbrushes and got creative,
searched for multiple colors of leaves,
collected acorn hats,
hugged a tree,
and picked out a pumpkin.
After finishing their tasks, they were able to enjoy a sweet treat, have some cider, and consider donating to Children's Hospital. Though the guests were cold, they were also quite generous, donating a total of nearly $900.
Maybe Mother Nature will be as generous next year!
