It was another fall/winter hybrid type of week in nature kindergarten.
In the beginning of the week, or fall, we added some special touches to our mouse houses, learning new smashing pumpkin strategies along the way.

With snow and polar air looking, we took extra time to enjoy some natural play as well.
Play time |
There was fungus among us |
We also played around with some photography. What a difference a day makes!
When winter returned later in the week, we still played, but we also focusing on our Sit Spot and observing how the land was changing in front of our own eyes.
Our Showy Goldenrod transformed to Snowy Goldenrod |
We also worked with our science curriculum of learning how plants and animals change the land to putting learning into action. We studied the beaver during most of the week, but since we don't have beaver lodges on our land, we opted to do a land-changing experiment with the squirrel instead.
Inside, we practiced being squirrels using small wooden dowels to search through "soil" to find seeds.
Then, after some natural play and exploration outside, we searched for acorns below the snow. Connecting the activity to animal needs, winter preparations, and hibernation, our lively discussion helped us better understand that winter can be a tough time for our animal friends.
Where are he acorns? |
Everyone enjoyed eventually finding their acorn and tossing it back into nature. Will next week be fall or winter? I guess we will just wait and see.
They're nutty! |
Until then, enjoy some more videos from our mouse house visitors. 😁
