Timberwolf Trail - Week 37 - 2015-16 Edition

It is hard to believe that the first year of forest kindergarten is wrapping up. What a year it has been!

After checking our bird feeders, we were able to catch a glimpse of an oriole. This brings our unofficial bird species count to 14. We then trekked out to check the tarps we placed out last week as part of our restoration project. We recently acquired some tarp branches from a local tree service, so the class expended some energy adding and revision our original tarp placement. I think the end result will help out for next year's plantings.

After all that labor and some snack, a wet natural play time led students to investigate a new trail they hadn't noticed before. It wasn't long before the majority of the class was bushwhacking through the woods.

With next week being the end of the year, we took some time and reviewed some of our favorite activities. Garden Yoga, the butterfly life cycle actions, the parts of a tree song, and a rousing edition of Hawks and Mice. Then, we explored some of the new growth that the last week of wet and hot weather has given us. We discussed spittlebug and galls by investigating some of the plants right alongside the trail.

With one week to go, I am excited to go out and celebrate nature one more time!

  1. This is an amazing concept. I love seeing your kiddos soak up all that nature has to teach them! Would you be willing to share any of your lesson planing materials or how you align your learning activities with content?
