Winter Walks

My family and I love to head out to Wisconsin Dells. Not for the waterparks. Not for the mini golf. Not for the food. Well, maybe a little bit for the food.  Mostly, we are there for the outdoor recreation.

We hiked some familiar trails and found some new ones, totaling just over 8 miles with three kids six and under.  Not too shabby.

Our first hike was part of Devil's Lake State Park. looking for a flatter, more kid-friendly excursion, we traveled to Steinke Basin for the first time. It definitely will not be the last. We enjoyed seeing eagles, did some snow painting, and even caught a few zzz's.

We then headed to Pewit's Nest for more fun. Oakley especially likd the  muddy parking pot.

Rather than wading through the cool summer water, we slid over the frozen winter ice.

We liked the ice waterfalls, even if they were small.

We wrapped up our day of hiking by visiting the State Natural Area, Fern Dell Gorge.

We have only hiked here once before but it was in a much different time of year.

We look forward to our next visit, hopefully with less ice.

Of course, when we made a stop in Madison on the way home., we visited the zoo to see our favorite rodents the capybara and our favorite mustelidae (look it up) Bucky Badger.
