Timberwolf Trail - Week 1 - 2017-18 Edition

Year three of nature kindergarten has been off to a nature-filled start. With even more of an emphasis on getting outside  and exploration through play, we made sure to get to know our outdoor space right away.

First Day. . .First Hike

A good chunk of our first few days dealt with boundaries and safety. Hammering down the expectations of our class and adhering to those expectations helps let us all know that our outdoor classroom is  to be respected. Practice makes progress so we practiced playing and exploring outside.

We brainstormed safety expectations about the rock pile. We practiced.

We explored around the fallen tree and learned about how to enjoy it. We practiced.

We found sapling forest and talked about taking care of it. We practiced.

We discovered the inside tree and discussed how we might use it. We practiced.

Long

We also reviewed one of our early math lessons about comparing lengths by finding, sorting, and comparing different sticks.

Longer

Longest, Shorter, Shortest

Of course, we also enjoyed running down the hill on our way inside. I expect this to once again become a tradition.

We were also lucky enough to receive a hatching butterfly from our associate principal. After a few days of watching the chrysalis complete its amazing transformation, we released our monarch, Elizabeth, on a milkweed plant on the trail.

If the first few days of nature are a sign of things to come, year number three will be bigger and better.
